Thru-Hiker’s Journey

If you are of a certain age and demographic, you probably spent many hours playing the Oregon Trail.

Gear was purchased, certain travelers had different attributes,  you resupplied, made decisions to push on or rest, and you hoped to negotiate the trail from St. Louis to the promised land of Oregon.

Scotts Bluff on the actual Oregon Trail. Sorry, it is not in 8-bit glory. 🙂

Sounds a bit like a thru-hiker perhaps? Maybe even a thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail?

Well, Brad Allmendinger of Headlamp Studios has created a fun little game for your Android, and iPhone platforms called the Thru-hiker’s Journey.

As mentioned, you can buy gear, visit towns, resupply, eat, sleep, and enjoy many other aspects of the AT thru-hiking experience.

You can even choose your hiker that represents a broad range of hiker types, ages, and backgrounds.

Many landmarks, such as shelters, will be familiar to any Appalachian Trail hiker.

The game will bring a chuckle. And the game can be addictive.

Overall? The game is just plain ole fun.

And if you are trapped in a boring meeting about the latest Weekly Crisis Of The Century (TM), rumor has it that some surreptitious playing may just make the meeting a tad more bearable.  Rumor only, mind you. 😉

Thru-hiker’s Journey will not give any great insights into the AT experience or help you plan a long hike.

What will this game do that most thru-hiker memoirs fail to accomplish?   Thru-hiker’s Journey will be a fun way to pass the time, be enjoyed, and give any AT hiker some fond memories.

So check out the game, have some fun enjoying the AT virtually, and watch out for the Norovirus!

Thru-hiker’s Journey is available for free on both Android and iOS platforms.

Disclosure: I received a beta version of this game to test.

I’ve been playing ever since you posted this game on Twitter. As it turns out, I’m not very good. Guess I’ll just have to keep at it.
